If 2023 was the "year of AI uncertainty," then 2024 could be called the "year of turmoil." While many buyers and providers are hopeful about the advancements in new language AI tools, there are few established success stories and no clear path forward. Although global inflation rates stabilized last year, the language services industry still faces many new challenges. In Europe, the war in Eastern Europe, high energy prices, declining productivity, and a fragmented regulatory environment are limiting innovation and investment. The AI supremacy race between the United States and China also continues, with the U.S. economy showing stability through low unemployment and sustained consumer spending.
The situation is unlikely to change significantly in 2025. While a focus on AI automation is expected across the industry, economic and geopolitical factors will increase uncertainty for businesses and organizations, clouding the industry's future. Leadership changes in the U.S. and Germany, concerns over tariff wars, and reductions in development aid will further complicate the challenges for LSPs.
Discussions with many LSPs throughout 2024 have made it clear that it was indeed a "year of turmoil." While some companies reported decreased customer demand and revenue, others achieved growth despite an increase in workload and a decline in per-word rates. A common theme was that profits increased or stabilized due to improved production efficiency and a high customer appetite for quality risk.
AI continues to be a central topic of discussion across the entire economy, especially in the job market. The vision of AI taking over white-collar jobs and reducing the need for human expertise has not yet been realized. A study by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University warns that over-reliance on AI can diminish workers' critical thinking skills. In the language services field, the integration of AI is progressing more as a supplement to existing workflows rather than a radical change.
Research for the Nimdzi 100 indicates that LSP growth in 2024 was slightly stronger than the previous year. The performance of large companies and LSPs in the entertainment sector was varied; while some firms grew, others saw their rankings fall or were placed on a watch list.
We have revised our industry growth forecast for 2024 from the previous 7.0% to a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.0%. The language services industry is projected to have reached $71.7 billion in 2024 and is forecast to grow by 5.6% to $75.7 billion in 2025.
The Nimdzi 100 ranking lists the world's top 100 language service providers based on revenue. This ranking is a live document and is subject to change. It is based on data as of February 27, 2025, but the latest data will be published in the full Nimdzi 100 market report to be released at a later date.
