On September 21, 1973, Japan and Vietnam officially established diplomatic relations. Since then, the two nations have deepened their friendly and cooperative ties across diverse fields, including politics, economics, culture, and sports. This relationship has expanded to encompass everything from regional-level engagement to leadership-level dialogue.
The year 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of these diplomatic relations. This milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on the relationship from the past to the present and to build a new foundation for future development. As equal partners, both countries aim for further growth at both the regional and global levels.

Under the theme "Hand in Hand to the Future, to the World," the people of both nations jointly implemented numerous activities and projects across various fields to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
A special website commemorating the anniversary was launched on November 29, 2022, by the Japanese organizing committee to introduce programs and activities promoting cooperation and exchange between the two countries.
A look back at the main milestones from the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973 to the present.
1973: Establishment of diplomatic relations.
2009: Establishment of a strategic partnership.
2011: Japan's recognition of Vietnam's market economy status.
2023: Establishment of a comprehensive and progressive partnership.
2024: Renaming of the comprehensive and progressive partnership (AAP).
On September 21, 2023, a commemorative ceremony was held in Hanoi to celebrate the 50th anniversary. The event was co-hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association.
The ceremony was attended by Vietnamese government officials, members of the Japanese Imperial Family, including Their Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino, the Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, and top leaders from various cooperating organizations and major companies in Vietnam.
A particularly noteworthy highlight of the 50th-anniversary events was the official visit of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Võ Văn Thưởng, and his wife to Japan on November 27, 2023. This visit was a valuable opportunity to deepen trust and understanding and to strengthen the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.
On the same day, during a meeting in Tokyo between President Thưởng and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, a joint statement was issued elevating Japan-Vietnam relations to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World." This step aims to further broaden the scope of cooperation between the two nations, responding to the aspirations of their people and contributing to prosperity in Asia and the world.
According to the Nhân Dân newspaper, Japan is a key economic partner for Vietnam, ranking second in the labor sector, third in investment and tourism, and fourth in trade. There are approximately 22,000 Japanese nationals living and working in Vietnam, while about 520,000 Vietnamese live and work in Japan. These figures illustrate the close ties between Japan and Vietnam, a connection that contributes to the further development of both countries.
